Scoring

The bowler is allowed 10 frames in which to knock down pins, with frames one (1) through nine (9) being composed of up to two rolls. The tenth frame may be composed of up to three rolls: the bonus roll(s) following a strike or spare in the tenth (sometimes referred to as the eleventh and twelfth frames) are fill ball(s) used only to calculate the score of the mark rolled in the tenth.

Breakdown:

  1. Frame 01: Player knocked down 8 pins on the first roll, and 1 pin on the second. This counts as 9 pins.
  2. Frame 02: Player knocked down 7 pins on the first roll, and the remaining three on the second. This is called a "spare". A spare is 10 pins + the amount of pins knocked down on the first ball of the next frame. That total gets recorded where the spare was shot. In this example, 7 / + 6 = 16. Frame 02's total is: 9 (total from Frame One) + 16 (Total from Frame 02 + 1st ball in Frame 03) = 25.
  3. Frame 03: Player knocked down 6 pins on the first roll, and 3 pins on the second. Adding 9 pins to the total of Frame Two = 34.
  4. Frame 04: Player knocked down all 10 pins on the first roll. This is called a "strike". A strike is 10 pins + the amount of pins knocked down on the next two rolls. In this example, X + 8 + 1 = 19. 34 + 19 = 53.
  5. Frame 05: As seen from the previous frame, player knocks down 8 pins on the first throw and 1 pin on the second for a total of 9 pins. Here we add 9 to 53 (Frame 04's total) which gives us 62.
  6. Frame 06: Player knocked down 8 pins on the first roll, and the remaining 2 pins on the second through. Spare! 8 / (which is 10) + 10 = 20. 62 + 20 = 82.
  7. Frame 07: This frame is a little tricky. Player knocked down all 10 pins on the first roll. The next frame the player knocked down all 10 pins again. On the players next turn, player knocked down 9 pins. Because the Strike is 10 + the next two rolls, the score for Frame 07 is 10 + 10 + 9 = 29. 82 + 29 = 111.
  8. Frame 08: Player knocked down all 10 pins on the first roll. Strike! Next two rolls: 9 + 1 = 10. 10 + 10 = 20. 111 + 20 = 131.
  9. Frame 09: Player knocked down 9 pins on the first roll, and the 1 remaining on the second roll. Spare! 9 / (10) + 8 = 18. 131 _ 18 = 149.
  10. Frame 10: Player knocked down 8 pins on the first roll, and the remaining 2 on the second roll. Because this is the 10th frame, player receives a bonus roll. On the bonus roll, player knocked down all 10 pins which makes the total pins knocked down in Frame 10: 8 / (10) + 10 = 20. 149 + 20 = 169
